Short answer: it depends on whether your existing school qualification is already recognized as equivalent to a German Abitur. If yes, you typically need TestAS. If not, you usually need a Studienkolleg year first, which ends in its own entrance exam (the Aufnahmeprüfung), not TestAS.
| TestAS | Studienkolleg Aufnahmeprüfung | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Applicants with a recognized qualification | Applicants needing a Studienkolleg prep year first |
| What it tests | General academic aptitude + subject module | German and often math, depending on the Kolleg and track |
| Run by | g.a.s.t. / TestDaF-Institut, nationally | Each Studienkolleg sets its own |
| Result used for | Direct Bachelor's application | Admission into the Studienkolleg course itself |
The qualification-recognition question is the deciding factor, and it varies by country of schooling. Confirm with uni-assist or your target university's international office. Our 2-question quiz gives a quick pointer in the meantime.
