uni-assist vs TestAS: What Each One Does and How They Fit Together
Two names come up again and again when international students apply for a Bachelor's degree in Germany: uni-assist and TestAS. They are often mentioned in the same sentence, so many applicants assume they are connected, or even the same thing. They are not.
- uni-assist checks your documents.
- TestAS tests your aptitude.
Some applicants need both, some need one, some need neither. This guide explains what each does, what it costs, how long it takes, and how to plan both so that neither one delays the other.

What uni-assist does
uni-assist checks international applications for many German universities. It looks at your school certificates and other documents, checks whether they formally qualify you for the programme, and converts your grade into the German system.
Depending on the university, uni-assist works in one of two ways:
- Standard procedure. uni-assist checks your documents and forwards your application to the university.
- VPD procedure. uni-assist issues a Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD), a certificate that shows which documents you submitted, how they are evaluated and how your grade converts to the German scale. You then submit the VPD to the university yourself, before its deadline. A VPD is valid for one year from the date of issue.
Fees
According to uni-assist:
- 75 euros for your first chosen study programme in a semester,
- 30 euros for each additional programme in the same semester,
- the same fees for the standard and the VPD procedure,
- fees must be paid whatever the result of the check,
- some universities pay the fee for their applicants, which you can see in your uni-assist account.
Processing time
uni-assist usually needs 4 to 6 weeks from the day it receives your online application. In busy periods before major deadlines, earlier is always better.
Not every university uses uni-assist
Many universities handle international applications themselves. Others use uni-assist for some programmes but not for their Studienkolleg. Always check the application instructions of each programme.
What TestAS does
TestAS is a standardised aptitude test for international applicants who want to study a Bachelor's programme in Germany. It is offered in German and English, digitally or on paper, at licensed test centres worldwide.
The digital TestAS has a Core Module (Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares) and one subject module matching your intended degree. Results come as a TestAS Score from 0 to 200 per module, plus a percentile rank. Our guide on how TestAS scoring works explains the numbers.
Universities use TestAS in different ways: as a requirement, as one factor in selection, or as a way for applicants to strengthen their profile. In some countries it is part of the APS procedure. g.a.s.t. names China and Vietnam as examples.
Fees and timing
g.a.s.t. uses three country groups with different prices, and you see the price for your country during online registration. Registration closes about one week before a digital exam and about five weeks before a paper exam. Results take about three weeks for digital and four weeks for paper, and the certificate does not expire.
Upcoming dates, with their registration deadlines and results dates, are on our TestAS dates page.
How the two connect
The only direct link between them: if your university processes applications through uni-assist and asks for TestAS, you add your TestAS result to your uni-assist application. According to g.a.s.t., you can do that by giving uni-assist your TestAS user number or by uploading your certificate in the uni-assist portal.
Everything else runs separately: different accounts, different fees, different timelines.
Which one do you need?
Work through each programme on your list:
- Does the university use uni-assist for this programme? Check the application page. If yes, you need a uni-assist application (standard or VPD, as the university specifies).
- Does the programme require or recommend TestAS? Check the admission rules. If yes, note which subject module it wants.
- Is your school certificate directly recognised? If not, you may need a Studienkolleg first. Our exam finder quiz helps you tell which path applies.
Write the answers down in one table. Applicants who keep one overview for all programmes miss far fewer deadlines.
Sequencing: the part that causes missed deadlines
Most missed deadlines do not come from any single hard step. They come from treating two independent processes as one, and starting the second only when the first is finished.
Run them in parallel:
| When | uni-assist | TestAS |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 months before the deadline | Collect and certify documents | Choose format and module, pick a date whose results arrive in time |
| 3 to 4 months before | Submit online application, pay fees | Register before registration closes, start preparing |
| 2 to 3 months before | Wait for the evaluation (4 to 6 weeks) | Sit the test |
| 1 to 2 months before | Receive VPD or forwarding confirmation | Receive results (about 3 to 4 weeks) |
| Before the deadline | Submit VPD to the university if needed | Add your TestAS user number or certificate |
Work backwards from each programme's deadline. If a date is tight, the digital TestAS helps because of its later registration and faster results.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for the TestAS result before starting uni-assist. The document check does not need your TestAS result to begin.
- Assuming the VPD is sent automatically. In the VPD procedure you submit it yourself.
- Registering for the wrong TestAS module. Check each programme's requirement first.
- Forgetting that uni-assist fees apply per semester. Applying again next semester means paying again.
Summary
uni-assist checks your documents, TestAS measures your aptitude. They are run by different organisations, cost different amounts and follow different timelines. Check for each programme whether it uses uni-assist and whether it asks for TestAS, then run both processes in parallel, working backwards from the deadline.
If TestAS is on your list, you can try real Core Module items for free and see what the test feels like before you register.
